The former Wanna One center has entered his serious acting era. He stars in the upcoming film The Man Who Lives with the King. This isn’t just another pretty costume drama. It tells the devastating story of King Danjong. Danjong was the sixth king of the Joseon Dynasty. He ascended the throne at only 12 years old following his father’s death.

History buffs know this story does not have a happy ending. His uncle, Grand Prince Suyang, staged a brutal coup to seize power. The young monarch was stripped of his title. He was then exiled to a remote spot in Gangwon Province called Cheongnyeongpo. He eventually met a tragic end there.

The movie focuses specifically on that exile period starting in 1457. But here is the twist. It moves the focus away from the dusty palace politics we usually see. Instead, it highlights the bond between the fallen king and the villagers who took him in. It sounds absolutely gut-wrenching, doesn’t it?

A Cast That Will Absolutely Wreck Us

The casting director deserves a raise for this lineup. Park Ji Hoon plays the tragic lead, Lee Hong Wi (King Danjong). But look at who is protecting him. This project marks a huge first for Director Jang Hang Jun. He has never directed a historical film before. He is famous for diverse hits like the basketball movie Rebound. Director Jang also directed the thriller Forgotten. Tackling a heavy sageuk is a massive shift in tone.

Fans went wild when he announced the cast on the YouTube channel VIVO TV. Jang promised to create a “heartfelt, high-quality film.” He specifically wants to bring new emotions to the audience. Can his signature storytelling style translate to the Joseon era? We think he can pull it off.

Production was handled by heavyweights BA Entertainment and Showbox. Filming ran from March 2025 through June 2025. They already released some stunning teaser images. One shows Park Ji Hoon with a soft, hopeful smile. That smile just makes the impending tragedy hurt even more.
