A Graceful Liar Episode 17: Lies Unravel, Revenge Looms
Just completed A Graceful Liar Episode 17 and I am completely stunned. This episode upended everything we believed we knew. If you have been following Cha Jung Won’s treacherous game of deceit, this episode definitely proves this point.
A Graceful Liar Episode 16 Recap
Episode 16 ended on a high cliffhanger as Han Hye Ra (Lee Il-hwa) found an old photo, which led her to question Jung Won’s identity, and Joo Ha Neul (Seol Jung Hwan) found evidence that was contradictory to Jung Won’s claims. At the same time, Gong Nan Sook (Lee Seung-yeon) planned her next move against Jung Won. Joo Young Chae (Lee Hyo-na) made a mysterious phone call, which hinted towards her return, and Jin Se Hun (Han Ki-woong) suggested teaming up against Jung Won and Jin Tae Seok (Choi Jong Hwan).
An Awful Liar episode 17 picks up exactly where we left off; tension is intense as Cha Jung Won (Lee Si-ah) finds herself cornered by various forces as her carefully constructed lies begin unravelling before Hye Ra confronts Jung Won over her photograph with questions she can only respond to by divulging her true identity.
Ha Neul confronts Jung Won with evidence she has collected, and their battle is heartrending – his affection and resentment toward her seem to clash in an unpredictable manner. Gong Nan Sook and Jin Tae Seok form an unearthly alliance to utilise Jung Won’s secrets against him to gain personal gain for themselves.
Jin Se Hun provides Jung Won with vital details regarding her father, Cha Ki Beom’s, past that may help clear his name, but pose an immediate danger to Jung Won himself. Jin Se Hun also gives vital evidence regarding Joo Young Chae (Kim Hyun-jae), hinting towards her imminent return; Park Kyung Shin (Kim Hyun-jae) must face consequences when Gong Nan Soko discovers their involvement in helping Jung Won.
Jung Won quickly finds herself drawn into an explosive climax when multiple secrets are unveiled simultaneously, and she recognises she may soon run out of time and options.
A Graceful Liar Episode 17 Spoilers
A Graceful Liar episode 17 delivers big surprises! One major twist occurs midway through when Jin Tae Seok shocks Gong Nan Sook by confessing his knowledge about Jung Won’s true identity for several episodes now, waiting and watching all along; now, however, he plans on using his knowledge for himself, further complicating their already complex relationship. They both rank amongst the harshest characters seen thus far on A Graceful Liar!
Ha Neul is stunned to learn of his family’s role in Jung Won’s father’s murder trial verdict, as his father played an indirect role that was unforeseen by him. Ha Neul realises his love affair has put him in an untenable situation as his family could have possibly destroyed her life, something his love affair could never do without complicating.
Since the start of this series, Jung Won and Hye Ra have been engaged in an increasingly heated battle. Hye Ra is constantly questioning Jung Won about her memories involving Young Chae; Jung Won finds it hard to respond directly and can feel Lee Siah’s anxiety as her carefully constructed lies are unravelling before his very eyes.
Jin Se Hun informs Jung Won that he has evidence against Gong Nan Sook that supports her father’s claim that Gong Nan Sook is responsible for his murder. While this information could clear Cha Ki Beom’s name and expose Gong Nan Sook, it could also expose Jung Won as lying – forcing Jung Won to choose between justice for her deceased father or maintaining the lifestyle she currently leads.
Episode Four culminates with an exciting conclusion that brought tears to my eyes. Hye Ra finds clear evidence of Jung Won’s true identity, prompting Lee Il-hwa’s face to give away that she knows she has finally got through to him, hinting that the next episode’s eventful confrontation could be very intense indeed.
Upcoming Episode Preview
Han Hye Ra, in her preview, requests that Jung Won undergo a DNA test, which will reveal her scheme quickly. There’s no escaping it; should the DNA test occur, everything Jung Won has created will crumble completely, and Jung Won looks absolutely terrified for one of the rare times during her ordeal. Gong Nan Sook escalates her war against Jung Won, as evidenced in the preview, which suggests that Gong Nan Sook could reveal Ha Neul, and this would end their relationship for good. As evidenced by Ha Neul’s response in the trailer, her devastation is evident, and it’s emotionally crippling.
Joo Young Chae’s proper form has finally returned, and her appearance is striking. A clip shows her entering her office at the Geonhyang Group office with everyone’s shocked reactions, suggesting chaos may soon ensue. How will Jung Won explain this phenomenon to Hye Ra? And will Hye Ra react negatively upon seeing two versions of her “daughter”?
Jin Se Hun and Jung Won’s bond is only growing stronger as they plan to expose Jin Tae Seok and Gong Nan Sook. In the trailer, we see them gathering evidence to substantiate their claims, suggesting that they’re ready to end any secrets, even if that means dismembering themselves.

What Makes This Episode Special:
Episode 17 of A Graceful Liar succeeds because it doesn’t shy away from confronting reality head-on. Writers finally delivered on our desire for intense confrontations between characters, while actors delivered performances that made every scene authentic and emotive.
Lee Si-ah captures Jung Won’s despair perfectly. She has been playing her dangerous game for weeks now, with visible cracks appearing over time. Lee Si-ah’s performance captures perfectly her frustration and fear as an entire existence is built upon lies, which are about to be exposed.
Lee Il-hwa brings depth to Hye Ra’s search for truth. Her character embodies not just someone searching for their daughter; instead, she left them as well as living with guilt for over 25 years. Watching Lee Il-hwa create Hye Ra’s real identity is fascinating, as one can witness both joy and resentment coursing through her facial expressions.
The supporting cast brings life and depth to each scene. Han Ki-woong as Jin Se Hun will leave you amazed, giving depth to a rather uninteresting character; Lee Seung-yeon makes Gong Nan Sook terrifying without ever overdoing things; Seol Jung Hwan will break your heart as Ha Neul, trapped between his birth family and love interest.
What makes this show exceptional is how it tackles issues related to identity, revenge and family. Jung Won embarked on her journey seeking revenge against her mother’s abandonment, but soon found out it can be much more complex when confronted by those you wish to harm. Moral ambiguity keeps audiences intrigued – there aren’t simple villains or heroes here – only damaged individuals taking risks and making difficult choices.
Episode 17 sets up for an explosive conclusion; lies will soon unravel, and no member of Geonhyang’s family will escape unscathed. I can hardly wait for episode 18’s conclusion! It keeps me on edge!
